Whenever you buy a new or used car, you must have a roadworthy certificate before you can change the registration to your name at VicRoads.
A roadworthy inspection can be carried out by any qualified mechanic and is a stringent process set out by the state government to ensure your car meets the minimum safety and maintenance requirements while driving on our roads and highways.
When you bring your car to us for a roadworthy inspection, we’ll check a range of things - as required by law - some of which include checking:
- our brakes
- Integrity of windows and windscreen
- Tyre wear and tear
- Bodywork damage
- Steering and suspension
Once this thorough check has been completed, we’ll either provide a roadworthy certificate or give you a written quote outlining the work that needs to be done to make your vehicle roadworthy.
In newer cars, you might not have to do any work at all, usually they're still in fairly good condition and not much has changed in the outline. however in older cars, or those with high kilometres, there might be a reasonable amount of work to complete before the car is deemed to be roadworthy.
